Find a New Phrase, #1

There are a few words and phrases that are becoming so overused today that I cringe everytime I hear them.

"At the end of the day"

I hear this multiple times each day on the radio, TV and I read it on the web. Strangely enough, I never hear the phrase spoken in personal conversations.

Try "ultimately", "finally,", "when all is said and done" or even "when the hog finishes its slop" just to spice things up a little bit.

I just want to make sure we're all on the same sheet of music. ACK!

I haven't heard that one. Seriously. I guess it's just a more musical version of "I just want to make sure we're all on the same page." It sounds worse, though.

A few years ago, some British media-relations people started telling celebs that if you pepper your conversations with phrases like "at the end of the day", then you'll come across as more intelligent. It promptly spread like wildfire and became horribly overused. I disliked it from the start, and now a wave of disgust washes over me whenever I hear it. So phony!

Heh, and you notice how they emphasize it? "At the end of the day" has its own special cadence that cannot be deviated from.

My ex g/f goes crazy over "essentially", but how can one avoid that word in law school?
