Friday Random Play: My Favorite 10 Albums I Forgot About

In which I fill in the songs from the favorite albums I forgot to mention last week. Note that Alien Lanes by Guided by Voices isn't on Rhapsody or it would be here.

  1. Afghan Whigs - "My Curse": Gentlemen - The time I rode with Travis to Des Moines in '94 to see the Whigs with Kevin was awesome. They played for three hours.
  2. The Flaming Lips - "Suddenly Everything has Changed": The Soft Bulletin - Last time I saw the 'Lips was when they played with the Butthole Surfers in Omaha in '92.
  3. Jane's Addiction - "Pig's in Zen": Nothing's Shocking - This was one of the albums I bought based on Rollingstone's review when I was in high school and proceeded to copy for all the cool kids I knew. Last time I saw these dudes was in Omaha in '91 or so.
  4. Afghan Whigs - "What Jail is Like": Gentlemen
  5. Liz Phair - "Never Said": Exile in Guyville - I've never seen Liz Phair and at this point, I probably wouldn't want to. Exile is a classic, though.
  6. Charles Mingus - "Fables of Faubus": Mingus, Ah um - If only. I'm not old enough to have seen Mingus.
  7. Public Enemy - "She Watch Channel Zero?!": It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back - Never saw PE. They just got back together to cut a pretty damn good track, though. I listen to Chuck D's radio show most Sunday nights.
  8. Secret Machines - "Nowhere Again": Now Here is Nowhere - I saw these guys last March at the Ranch Bowl in Omaha. The Ranch Bowl sucks as a venue.
  9. A Tribe Called Quest - "Butter": The Low End Theory - I saw the Tribe with De La Soul at a tiny ass club in downtown Lincoln. Awesome.
  10. Dinosaur Jr. - "In a Jar": You're Living All Over Me - Never seen 'em in all my years. Missed them this summer. Hopefully they'll be back around.
  11. Sonic Youth - "Schizophrenia": Sister - I've seen Sonic Youth thrice, the last time with Stereolab at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. This song is about Phillip K. Dick's dead twin sister.
  12. Pavement - "Summer Babe (Winter Version)": Slanted and Enchanted - I last saw Pavement in the summer of '94 at a club in Lincoln that later went out of business because they guaranteed Bad Brains more money than they could pay.
  13. A Tribe Called Quest - "Excursions"
  14. Secret Machines - "Road Leads Where It's Led" - One of the most awesome songs I've ever heard. It would have been extra cool if the Ranch Bowl didn't suck.
  15. Sonic Youth - "Catholic Block" - This song isn't about Phillip K. Dick although most of the songs on Sister were.
  16. Jane's Addiction - "Summertime Rolls" - A song that makes you want to get naked.
  17. Liz Phair - "Glory" - "He's got a really big tongue..."
  18. Charles Mingus - "Jelly Roll"
  19. Pavement - "Conduit for Sale!" - Buy some freakin' conduit already!
  20. John Coltrane - "Summertime": My Favorite Things - And my favorite Coltrane album. His first foray into modal jazz and what lay beyond.

Steve, I agree the Ranch Bowl sucks, but TSM put on a pretty good show, all things considered. That last song when the drummer went nuts was all one big note and I know concerts are supposed to leave your ears buzzing, but my head rang for three days after that.

Ahhhh... Sister and the Low End Theory. Great taste in music I see Steve. We used to play Low End all the time until Chronic and the 36 Chambers came out. Those were indeed the days... I'm going to have to post my top 25 this weekend over at lincolnite...

On a completely unrelated note, my emails to you have been bouncing for the last two days. Same with emails to Firestone. You guys are both at neb.rr.com. You got any clues?

Nick, Happy delurking. Were you at that show? Even their light show was good. I can't imagine seeing them in a real venue. The band really hurt by the Ranch Bowl accoustics was Autolux.

Mistah T: I love Chronic and 36 Chambers but I'll take Low End Theory and Bizarre Ride II... anytime.
