Newspapers are hurting

"IT'S OFFICIAL: 2005 WILL BE the newspaper industry's worst year since the last ad industry recession. And things aren't looking much better for next year either, according to a top Wall Street firm's report on newspaper publishing."

The story goes on to talk about how on-line media is cutting into traditional print newspaper revenue. The question is, are people just reading on-line news more because it's more convenient and cheaper, or is it because the shift from having real investigative reporters to stenographers for the government and big business (Judy Miller, et al.) has caused people to dismiss the print media (Toledo Blade and a few other papers excluded) as mostly useless?

Oh, and how awesomely lame was it that the writer of that story began it with "It's Official?"

I for one have not dismissed the print media. The Miller thing is totally aside (her problem was allowing herself to be seduced by the wrong sources, and seduced again, and again...). I always look to the print media for sources of news first, and NOT the blogs.

Its sad to see the catch-22 with readership and profits, especially in the global online age. For me, paying a little $$$ a year or whatever to read good stories in a US paper that publishes in print and online isn't a problem. It is a problem however if you are living in countries like Indonesia or Peru.

I like to think I pay my dues. Sure I freeload off of CNN.com and fox or wapo or whatever like everyone else. But their bills are already paid so I don't feel a need to pay them anything. At the same time, I enjoy reading stories from shops like salon.com. Its good writing, its not from the major networks, and I find the majority of their stories (mainly "liberal" but they have some good "conservative" writers) informative and entertaining. I support what they do, so I part with a little cash to help them out.
