Spotlight on Darfur

I've been negligent in keeping up with reposting the Coalition for Darfur posts that come my way. Darfur seems to have slipped away from the public consciousness over the last few months.

Back in March my sister-in-law had a letter to the editor in the local paper that elicited a response from Senator Nelson. There were a few more letters after that but not much more. Granted, we've had our own major catastophres and criminal investigations taking up much of the news cycle but that doesn't mean the killing in Sudan has stopped.

We touched on the Sudan in International Law last week. Larry Johnson (not the CIA guy), formerly of the UN and IAEA and proud Nebraska graduate, spoke to my class about the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. He said that despite Colin Powell's declaration that there was a genocide going on in Darfur, the international community hasn't been as forthcoming.

That this is not being taken seriously is illustrated by the Bush Administration's granting of a waiver to the Sudanese government to allow them to hire a Washington lobbyist to improve its public image and fight any hostile legislation.

I posted earlier this year about a Canadian oil company facing trial in the United States for its alleged contributions to the genocide in Darfur. I can't help but wonder if oil is why our government is giving the Sudanese government such access.

The blog from members of the United States 7th Fleet in the Indian Ocean has a Spotlight on Darfur right now which is very informative. Even Michelle Malkin linked to it.
